23% of UK hospitality businesses operated at a loss in the quarter to June 2026, against 15% in the previous quarter. The figure comes from a survey of operators by UKHospitality, BBPA, BII and Hospitality Ulster, with fieldwork between 19 May and 9 June 2026, published on 30 June 2026.

That is one site in four paying wages and rent out of money it has not made. Inside a margin that thin, the lines nobody checks are the expensive ones. Delivery refunds are one of them. The deduction arrives in a statement a week after the order, long after the kitchen has forgotten the bag.

Where does an undisputed refund land?

On the payout, not on the sales figure. Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat take the value of a reported missing or incorrect item off the weekly statement. Commission is still charged on the full order value. The restaurant keeps the cost and loses the revenue. A refund that nobody disputes is accepted by default.

The same deduction comes back on the payout week after week. It appears as an order error adjustment in Uber Eats Manager and as a compensation line in Deliveroo Partner Hub. The manager reading it a week later has the amount and the order number, and nothing from the counter to put against them. Without a photo of the packed bag, the only answer available is to accept the charge.

An operator reading that table cannot move rent or commission this month. The refund line is different. It comes out of the restaurant’s own money and it can be contested. What a dispute needs is evidence from the counter, taken at the moment the bag was packed.

Bronze photographs every order before it leaves the kitchen and compares what was ordered with what was packed. When a customer reports a missing item, the dated photo of that order is already on file and the evidence is ready to dispute in one click. Restaurants on Bronze won 83% of the disputes resolved over the last 12 months.
